Panelbeating in the 21st Century – Highly Sophisticated & Model-Specific

Collision repair in the 21st Century is complex, precise, and in many cases, model-specific.  In New Zealand collision repair facilities (panelbeaters) are predominantly owner-operated and independent, and range from small 4 – 5 person panelbeating shops to very large sophisticated operations employing dozens of highly-trained specialists.  Though the panelbeating industry is entirely unregulated in New Zealand, most reputable firms have one thing in common – I-CAR training.

I-CAR is the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair, an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing the information, knowledge and skills required to perform complete safe high quality collision repairs.  Formed in 1979 out of a collaboration across the six segments of the collision repair Inter-Industry, I-CAR serves — and is represented by — all segments of the Inter-Industry:

• Collision repair
• Insurance
• Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)
• Education, training and research
• Tools, equipment and supply
• Related industry services

I-CAR’s purpose is to provide everyone involved in collision repair with access to high-quality, industry-recognized training solutions and standards. I-CAR also encourages and supports ongoing conversations in the industry on issues that impact collision repair.

Funding for the organization is primarily derived from student tuition. This ensures that I-CAR can remain unbiased in developing programs and services on an industry-wide basis. I-CAR delivers its services and training throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

I-CAR technical standards are meaningful and ensure quality and safety for customers.  In New Zealand the Collision Repair Association (CRA) delivers the relevant training and assesses service provider qualifications.  A grading system is used to assess collision repair facilities and the highest status is certified Structural Repair Centre (SRC’s).  Crash Management contract with SRC’s to ensure the highest service and technical standards are delivered for our clients.  This provides us with confidence and supports our mission to provide our business partners and customers with the best collision repair experience available in the market.
