Every country has it’s own ‘driving style’. It’s often said that the Americans are the most courteous (litigation avoidance perhaps?), the Italians and the French are the craziest (you’ll agree if you’ve ever tried driving in Paris on Christmas eve), and that NZ is somewhere in the middle.
There are some good habits from all cultures. While we’re not keen on the drill for navigating an 8 lane round-about in Paris, we do like the U.S. concession for a free right turn on a red light when there’s no traffic coming. That would be a free left turn in our case, lets get that clear. Anything to make Auckland grid-lock flow better…

Not sure about the ‘free left turn on a red’ idea, I’ve seen a lot of claims where the at-fault party ‘never even saw the other car’, so this could just increase the problem. I do like the European rule of keeping the outside lane open for passing only though, far too many NZ drivers hog the ‘fast lane’ even when they’re under the speed limit – it’s rude and it’s dangerous. I think there’s a case for ticketing obstructive drivers as well as speedsters, they both cause the same problem – motor vehicle accidents, sorry panelbeating industry, sorry Crash Management!
